Herman Aufderheide Dies at 66

Herman Aufderheide, 66, prominent in business, political and social life throughout the state, died at the Union hospital at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday.  He had entered the hospital Sunday but had been in failing health seven months.

Mr. Aufderheide had a long and varied career as a citizen and businessman in his native town.  At the time of his death he was second vice president of the State Bank of New Ulm, and had been a director since 1943.  He served as a member of the New Ulm school board from September 1940 to June 1947.

As one of the organizers of the Concord Singers and the Concordia bowling club, he served on the board of directors of both many years and also was on St. Paul's Lutheran church council.

He was a member of several New Ulm charter commissions and belonged to the Izaac Walton league.

In State Affairs

Mr. Aufderheide became secretary to Floyd B. Olson when he was governor in 1935.  He also served as secretary to Hjalmor Peterson, who succeeded Olson at the time of his death.  As state chairman of the Farmer-Labor party in 1934, his advice was sought by members of the party until the time of his death.

During World War II he was chairman of the Brown county rationing board.

Herman Aufderheide was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Aufderheide and was born here July 22, 1892.  He graduated from Dr. Martin Luther college in 1910 and from the Mankato Commercial college in 1912.  He taught school in Arlington for a year and then returned to New Ulm and associated with his father and brother, Karl, in the conduct of the New Ulm Brick & Tile yards.

He later formed a partnership with his brother and took over the industry.  This partnership was dissolved in 1936.  In 1947 he formed New Ulm Wood Products, Inc., with his son, Howard.  This business was recently sold to Stimpert Enterprises.

He was married to Esther Sannwald in New Ulm Nov. 28, 1917.  The home is at 1019 S. Minnesota.

The widow and three sons survive.  Capt. Howard F. Aufderheide, U. S. Air Force, Sacramento, Calif.; Dr. Arthur C. Aufderheide, pathologist at St. Mary's hospital, Duluth; and Fred H. Aufderheide, assistant cashier at the Farmers and Merchants State Bank of New Ulm.  There are five grandchildren.

Two sisters also survive:  Mrs. George (Hertha) Gieseke, St. Paul, and Mrs. Arthur L. (Emma) Boock, Spencer, Wis.

Final rites will be Friday afternoon from St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran church, the Rev. W. J. Schmidt officiating.

The body will be at the Gedstad funeral home this (Thursday) afternoon and evening and until it is removed to the church at 11:30 a.m. Friday, where it will lie in state from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m., the time of the funeral service.  Burial will be in the Lutheran cemetery.
