Martin Scott, who died at his home west of the city Tuesday (June 1, 1915), was one of the early residents of the city, and was prominent in business and politics in the earlier days of Little Falls. He was one of the best known men in the city. The illness to which he succumbed had confined him to his bed for a little over a week, but he had been in poor health for years. Martin Scott was born March 8, 1844, at Chester, Penobscot county, Maine. He came to Minnesota Sept. 18, 1867, and after living for a time at Elk River, came to Little Falls in 1880. He was married in 1874 at Osceola, Minn., to Vernella Thorpe. He was the pioneer brickmaker of Little Falls, having started in the manufacture of brick over a year before any other person was engaged in the business here. Later he took in C. A. Sprandel as a partner, but bought the latter’s interest in the plant after they had been in partnership for a time. He was a veteran of the Civil war, having served in company A, First Maine Heavy Artillery, from July 1862, to June 6, 1865. There are five children living, all of whom, except Mrs. Wright, are here. They are Mrs. Fred Eaton and Leo Scott, St. Paul; Mrs. Frank Reid, Walker; Mrs. Albert Wright, Alberta, Can.; Mrs. Everett Savage, Little Falls.
