Francis and Louise Gits, the parents of Ed. Gits, also reside in Ghent and have done so since they came from Belgium in 1883. Francis Gits was one of the early business men of Ghent and one who has done much to bring it to its present standing. At one time and another he conducted a blacksmith shop, general store, hardware store, hotel and livery barn and erected six or seven of the buildings of the village. He has also engaged quite extensively in farming and burned the first and only brick ever manufactured in the town. In the Gits family are seven children, as follows: Paul, Julius, Joe, Victor, Clemence (Mrs. Charles Foulon), Edmund and Arthur. Prudence, who became the wife of Gustave Vergote, is deceased.
