Minneapolis Stone Arch Bridge

Recently, I finished a new YouTube video about the Minneapolis Stone Arch Bridge. As its name implies, the bridge was built of stone. However, I recently researched the histories of both the Minneapolis and St. Paul Union depots. These two buildings were made out of brick. The Minneapolis Stone Arch Bridge was constructed to connect these two depot structures. I have visited the stone arch bridge in the past.  I walked out over the Mississippi River on it to observe the falls and see the Minneapolis skyline. It is a pretty remarkable structure. I have always been interested in James J. Hill, who was the primary backer of the bridge. In a book I helped to write, “Reshaping the Tornado Belt,” we included a biography on James J. Hill. So it is always neat to re-establish myself with something Hill did. The Minneapolis Stone Arch Bridge was constructed in 1883 and 1884, and the majority of its material came from Minnesota. It is a fascinating story, and the YouTube video covers quite a few of the historical elements. Check it out. I am always looking for feedback, so leave a comment about if you enjoyed it or not.

What happened to all the old Minnesota brick makers?  With greater numbers of people moving into the state, there would always be a need for brick, right?  Yet, in the early 1900s, there were hints that the industry was already hurting.  To find the answers to these questions, I have sought out some of the…
